About NutritionRanked

NutritionRanked is a free nutrition research tool that scores and ranks 80,091 grocery products across 9 health goals — including heart health, weight loss, blood sugar management, and muscle building — using verified nutrition label data from Open Food Facts and USDA FoodData Central.

Our Mission

Grocery shopping shouldn't require a nutrition degree. We built NutritionRanked to give every shopper a clear, data-driven answer to "What should I eat for my health goal?" — no guesswork, no marketing claims, just numbers from real nutrition labels.

Data Sources

Every score on NutritionRanked is derived from two primary data sources covering lab-tested and community-verified nutrition information:

Open Food Facts

The world's largest open-source food database with over 3 million products. Community-verified nutrition labels, ingredients lists, NOVA processing classifications, and additive data. Licensed under ODbL.

USDA FoodData Central

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's lab-tested nutrition database. Provides gold-standard nutrient values for branded and generic foods sold in the United States.

Scoring Methodology

Each product receives a score from 1 to 10 for each of our 9 health goals. Scores are calculated using a multi-factor algorithm that weighs different nutritional attributes based on scientific evidence for that specific goal:

GoalPrimary Factors
🫀 Heart HealthSaturated fat, fiber, sodium, oil types, cholesterol-lowering ingredients
💪 Muscle BuildingProtein per calorie ratio, absolute protein content
🔥 Weight LossCalorie density, fiber (satiety), protein, sugar content
🩸 Blood SugarFiber-to-carb ratio, sugar content, whole grains, refined starches
🦴 Bone HealthCalcium sources, protein, sodium (calcium excretion), phosphoric acid
🧠 Brain HealthOmega-3 sources, sugar, fiber (gut-brain axis), artificial additives
🏃 EnergyComplex carbs, fiber, sugar (crash risk), protein, calorie adequacy
🌱 Clean LabelNOVA processing group, additive count, ingredient list length
👶 Kids / GrowingSugar, sodium, additives, protein, calcium sources

Scores start at 5 (neutral) and are adjusted up or down based on how each factor compares to evidence-based thresholds. Final scores are clamped between 1 and 10. A score of 8+ is labeled "Great," 6–7 is "Good," 4–5 is "Okay," and 1–3 is "Watch."
